Abstract
•”‘Understanding subduction zone topography through modelling of coupled shallow and deep processes’ an ITN-SUBITOP project”
SUBITOP is a recent Innovative Training Network linked to Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions encompassing 15 Early Stage Researcher (ESR) projects and 10 Institutions from 8 European countries. The ICTJA hosts 2 of these projects whose researchers, Kittiphon Boonma and Ajay Kumar, incorporated to the Institute in September, and will present their respective master degree research and future work.
•‘Plate tectonics of New Zealand: insights from 3D thermomechanical modelling’ a càrrec de Kittiphon Boonma
Application of geodynamic numerical models to the micro-continent of New Zealand which comprises two opposing subduction zones (Hikurani and Puysegur), sandwiching an oblique continental transform fault (Alpine Fault). The future ESR-5 work focuses on ‘Slab tearing, vertical tectonic motions, and the Miocene marine gateways across the Gibraltar Arc’.
•‘The 2015 April 25 Gorkha (Nepal) Earthquake and its Aftershocks: Implications for lateral heterogeneity on the Main Himalayan Thrust’ a càrrec d’Ajay Kumar.
A seismological study of the Gorkha earthquake (Mw 7.8) occurred by thrust faulting on a ~150 km long and ~70 km wide, locked downdip segment of the Main Himalayan Thrust, causing the Himalaya to slip SSW over the Indian Plate, and was followed by major-to-moderate aftershocks. The future ESR-7 work focuses on ‘Topographic response to lateral changes in subduction polarity’.
