Special issue on crystal deformation research coedited by Maria Gema Llorens

Maria Gema Llorens, Juan de la Cierva researcher at Geosciences Barcelona – CSIC (GEO3BCN-CSIC), is one of the guest editors of the special issue entitled ‘Crystal Deformation‘ run by the journal Crystals, along with Brahmananda Pramanik, Ph.D., P.E. from Montana Tech. This issue aims to gather results from current investigations over deformation phenomena of crystals and crystalline materials based on experimental and numerical modelling.

“The study and analysis of crystal deformation is getting significant attention in recent decades”, highlights Gema Llorens. Precisely, Dan Schechtman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of quasicrystals in 2011.

According to Llorens, this special issue invites researchers from different fields to reach a more integrated scope of the topic. “Crystal deformation spans several disciplines: materials science, engineering, and Earth Sciences among others. These are communities with very different objectives, who tend to publish in different journals and, hence, there is little interaction between them”, explains Llorens.

Llorens claims, on the one hand, “the importance of the study of the microstructure and physics of minerals and rocks have in the large scale study of the Earth”, and, on the other, the idea that “to advance in science and overcome the limits of the current knowledge, a multidisciplinary approach is needed”.

“I hope that there will be the same number of contributions from Earth Science field as those from Material Science and engineering”, says Llorens. In this sense, Llorens indicates that, from Geosciences point of view, they are searching manuscripts dealing with the location of the deformation related to crystalline anisotropy and the recrystallization produced by the crystalline deformation.

Issue editors also hope to compile manuscripts that investigate materials based on the crystalline structure alternation as well as research on mechanical twinning (the formation of grain boundaries in twist) causing dislocation and fracture mechanism of the materials.

The manuscript submission process is now open and the deadline is 30 April 2021.
