Irene Pérez Cáceres, researcher at GEO3BCN-CSIC, has participated in the first edition of “Outono Xeolóxico” (Geological Autumn), an outreach event organized by the Montañas do Courel Geopark (Galicia). Last 4 of October, Perez led one of the scheduled fieldtrips.
The fieldtrip was focused on the glaciarism, the rivers and the geological resources of the A Seara and Vieirios valley, two small towns placed in the middle of Courel Mountains. Perez Cáceres explained the geomorphology of the area and showed some of the glacial deposits.
Moreover, the nearly 45 participants of the fieldtrip learnt how the different rocks from the area have been used as a construction material for the rural heritage. The fieldtrip ended with a visit to the Cascada de Vieiros (Vieiros waterfall).
The fieldtrip was part of the scheduled activities of the Geolodia 2020, an event that was planned to be held last May but it had to be postponed because of the Covid-19 outbreak.
“Outono Xeolóxico de las Montañas do Courel” consists of a series of outreach activities which are held throughout several Atumn weekends. This initiative is aimed to make the geological resources of the geopark known by means of dissemination talks and guided fieldtrips.
Montañas do Courel was designated as geopark by the UNESCO in 2019 and its, by the moment, the only current geopark of Galicia.
