Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Numerical Models Applied to Geosciences

PROJECT SUMMARY

Geosciences are characterized by the use and processing of large amounts of information. The processes occurring within the Earth involve interactions between different physical phenomena, such as the dynamics of solids and fluids, whose coupling is vital for understanding their global behavior. The different temporal and spatial scales at which these processes occur increase the difficulty of their solution. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help us overcome the limitation of large datasets in multiscale modeling by creating predictive models. This project aims to train an expert in multifysical and multiscale modeling with AI. The main objective of this project is to attract talent, train them, and open a new line of research in geosciences that combines high-performance numerical modeling with AI. The recruited individual will carry out their activities within the Geodynamic Modeling Laboratory of GEO3BCN, co-directed with the Numerical Calculation Group of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD.
  • High proficiency in English.
  • Knowledge of numerical techniques.
  • Participation in research projects.

Valuable Qualifications

  • Experience in numerical modeling, preferably in geosciences.
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics.
  • Experience in HPC and AI techniques.
  • International stays.

WHAT IS OFFERED

GEO3BCN has a geodynamic modeling laboratory that has developed different modeling codes and techniques. The modeling laboratory currently works through three units associated with universities and research centers where the recruited individual can develop their work:

  1. With UPC, facilitating the candidate’s access to infrastructures and organized activities, participating in courses and stays during this contract.
  2. With BSC (Barcelona Supercomputer Center), benefiting from access to the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer and technical support.
  3. With the Department of Petrology at the University of Barcelona (UB), incorporating data from natural samples.

During this contract, several long-term stays are planned at:

  1. UPC, with the co-IP, experts in numerical techniques.
  2. Durham University, a leading group in geodynamic modeling.
  3. BSC, experts in AI techniques.

The interaction between the four groups guarantees the recruited individual the necessary scientific and technical support to carry out the proposed project.

Contract Conditions: Permanent contract for a Postdoctoral Researcher associated with the 4-year Momentum Project in accordance with Spanish Science Law. Annual gross salary (41,000 € – 52,000 €).

Interested candidates must be registered in the CSIC job bank before 1/09/2024.
