By studying the signals of a dozen of marsquakes registered by the SEIS broadband seismometer deployed by the NASA's InSight mission, an international team of scientists has been able to determine the inner structure of Mars. The results of this research are published in three papers in the journal "Science" offering new details of the size of the planet's core and the structure and thickness of its crust and mantle by analyzing seismic signals. Martin Schimmel, a researcher at GEO3BCN-CSIC and collaborator of the team of the Institute du Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) coordinated by Philippe Lognonné, has co-authored two of the three released papers.
GEO3BCN-CSIC researcher, María-Gema Llorens, has been recently appointed as a new member of the Cryospheric Sciences section of the Spanish Commission of Geodesy and Geophysics (CEGG), a section that was recently created and which is headed by Francisco Navarro, professor at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
It is essential to quit using traditional fossil fuels and start implementing sustainable methods to reduce pollution. To achieve this goal, subsoil provides us with opportunities. Using geothermal energy and underground hydrogen storage are two options located inside the Earth that can decarbonize the energy industry and mitigate climate change.
María José Jurado, researcher at GEO3BCN-CSIC, was one of the invited speakers of the 2-days event "CSIC: get ready for Horizon Europe!" organized by the CSIC Deputy Vice-Presidency for International Relationships between June 29th and 30th. This thematic event, which was held both online and in-person, was aimed at showing the main novelties and new opportunities brought by "Horizon Europe", the new research and innovation funding program launched by the European Union (2021-2027). Jurado offered the talk entitled "How to bring your research results to the market" on 3rd June.
The 10th edition of the Spanish Geological Congress will be held in Vitoria from July 5-7 2021. The congress is fostered by the Spanish Geological Society and organized by the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EH). The meeting should have been held in 2020 but it was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The current edition will be organized as an hybrid meeting, allowing in person and online participation. There are 20 scheduled sessions and symposiums, apart from several plenary sessions, short workshops, and field trips.
Adelina Geyer, researcher at GEO3BCN-CSIC, and Llorenç Planagumà, consultant of the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone and the Centre per a la Sostenibilitat Territorial, gave the online talk "What we know about the volcanoes of Girona?" to more than 800 students from 14 primary schools that participate in the "Green Schools" program of Girona region. The talk, which was given last 31 of May, was part of the cycle entitled "Environmental experiences showcase" ("Aparadors d'Experiències Ambientals") hosted during Nature's Week. A total of 46 groups of students attended online the talks given by Geyer and Plangumà focused on explaining the volcanic features and phenomena and the vulcanism of the Girona region. "There are not only volcanoes in la Garrotxa, but also there are volcanoes in the Empordà and Girona", said Llorenç Planagumà.
