Geosciences Barcelona (GEO3BCN-CSIC) joins the Catalan network for innovation and scalability of knowledge in differential technologies in the field of renewable hydrogen (H2CAT) as a partner entity. With this new addition, the network enhances its capabilities in geological hydrogen storage from this research center under the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
Juan Alcalde, a researcher at GEO3BCN-CSIC, is the center’s representative in this network, which brings together more than 250 researchers specializing in renewable hydrogen, 10 entities, and over 40 research groups spread throughout Catalonia. The H2CAT Catalan network unites the leading Catalan research groups in the green hydrogen sector to carry out programs for the valorization and transfer of research and development results in the green hydrogen value chain in Catalonia.
The initiative, coordinated by Eurecat and created at the beginning of 2023, aims to valorize and transfer its results and solutions to Catalonia’s green hydrogen value chain. The network is a forward-looking endeavor, as green hydrogen is considered one of the main long-term energy vectors. Additionally, it provides a solution for hard-to-decarbonize sectors.
Among H2CAT’s activities are the launch of the H2CAT Observatory and work on four shared thematic axes: hydrogen production technologies, storage and distribution, the use of hydrogen as an energy source, and its use as a raw material.
The network also features a catalog of products and services, organizes investment forums, demonstration sessions to facilitate contact with society and businesses, and thematic forums to adapt the network’s technologies to market needs. The network’s work also includes actions for training research teams in business, with cross-disciplinary training in valorization, transfer, and entrepreneurship.
