SUBITOP Early Stage Researchers (ESR), Kittiphon Boonma and Ajay Kumar at ICTJA-CSIC, visited for the first time Institut Menendez y Pelayo as a part of SUBITOP ETN network outreach activity. For the next three years, they will develop different outreach activities related to their Ph.D. projects about studying of subduction zones in the Western Mediterranean area.

During their presentations, both ESR Kittiphon Boonma and Ajay Kumar introduced themselves and their Ph.D. research projects which are being carried out at ICTJA-CSIC.

ICTJA-CSIC researcher, Ivone Jiménez Munt, accompanied both ESRs and presented to the secondary school students what ICTJA-CSIC is and what theSUBITOP project is about. She explained what a research project is, how and where we have to apply for it and, she presented the SUBITOP project.

SUBITOP ESRs’ first outreach session was at Institut Montserrat (Barcelona) in December 2016, followed by this session at Institute Menedez y Pelayo (Barcelona). Kittiphon and Ajay will explain the SUBITOP project during the next three years to the students of Biology and Geology, who at the moment are coursing the 4th grade (and they are 15 years old). Within the next three years, the two ESRs will pay multiple visits, 2 or 3 per year,  to both institutes to show how their research projects are progressing.

The aim of these visits is two-fold: the first objective is to introduce younger students to research in science, specifically earth science in this case; the second objective is to make science more approachable, as well as to inspire curiosity about scientific concepts.
