Consul Vitalii Tsymbaliuk visited the facilities of Geosciences Barcelona to learn first-hand about the scientific work carried out at the research centre and to explore potential avenues for collaboration

Vitalii Tsymbaliuk, representing the Consulate General of Ukraine in Barcelona, has visited the facilities of Geosciences Barcelona (GEO3BCN-CSIC). The purpose of the visit was to learn first-hand about the scientific work carried out at the research center and to explore potential avenues for collaboration.

Tsymbaliuk was welcomed by the director of GEO3BCN-CSIC, Santiago Giralt; the manager, José Cruz; the Ukrainian researcher, Hanna Liventseva; and the center’s project manager, Silvia Zafrilla.

During the visit, the consul was introduced to the working environment of researcher Hanna Liventseva, who is currently involved in a project focused on the geothermal potential of Catalonia and Ukraine, as part of the CSIC program for scientific cooperation with Ukraine. Liventseva also presented to the consul her collection of minerals and rocks from Ukraine, which will soon be exhibited at the CSIC delegation in Catalonia.

Tsymbaliuk also visited the Raman laboratory, led by researcher Ramon Cuscó. During the tour, Cuscó demonstrated how this service operates, highlighting that it is available to Ukrainian scientific personnel. The laboratory is equipped with specialized instruments for performing Raman spectroscopy, a technique that uses lasers to analyze the structure and composition of materials without damaging them. It also allows for highly precise measurements at different temperatures.

The meeting also served to strengthen the relationship between the Consulate of Ukraine and GEO3BCN-CSIC, with the intention of expanding collaborations between both institutions. Currently, the center has already signed five collaboration agreements with Ukrainian universities, research centers, and non-governmental organizations, through which seminars and other geological knowledge exchange activities have been carried out.
