Geochemical indicators in biogenic carbonates from experimental cultures. Application to the paleoenvironmental reconstruction of lacustrine sequences

The geochemical indicators in biogenic carbonates from sedimentary sequences are common tools for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Their use has resulted in a milestone for establishing the base levels of the climate change without anthropic influence.

In particular, the biogenic carbonates from non-marine environments are used for climate change studies in regional or local settings. The skeletal carbonates from limnic organisms like charophytes, ostracods and molluscs, record the temperature and chemical features (trace elements and isotopes) of the environment where they were formed. The record reflects the water chemistry and it is influenced by several fisico-chemical factors and vital effects. The main objective of the project attempts to evaluate the quality and applicability of some geochemical indicators in biogenic carbonates obtained from culture experiments through their use to paleoenvironmental reconstruction of selected, relevant lacustrine sequences. These sequences have been selected on the basis of the quality of the biogenic carbonate content, the fossil associations and the paleolimnological interest. In order to attain this goal, some laboratory experiments have been planned to complete the studies developed up to now. They will be done on some of the taxa presented in the selected sequences because of their large environmental tolerance range. These studies will include the mineralogical and geochemical characterization of the biogenic carbonates generated in experimental cultures and the determination of environmental transfer functions (partitioning coefficients and isotopic vital fractionations).
